Children's Church Lessons

Kids' Corner Pre-K-2 Grade Children's Church / Sunday School Lesson

Title: David and Goliath: I Come in the Name of the Lord Almighty!

Verse: 1 Samuel 17:45, David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.

Objective:  Kids will learn that although they may be small like David – they have a very big God! They will understand that just like David they can stand in the Name of the Lord Jesus for any problem, “giant” they face.

Spark

"Whoa, That’s Big!"

  • Setup: Use a measuring tape and a streamer on the wall to mark a height of 9–10 feet to represent the giant Goliath.
  • Have the kids stand against the wall to see how they measure up to a giant.

Transition: Tell the kids, You've heard this story, but today we’re going to look at the weapon David used to win.  It wasn't a sword, and it wasn't just rocks—it was a Name! David was small, but he had a very big God!

Scripture

Open your Bible to 1 Samuel 17. Use simple language to briefly explain that a giant named Goliath was teasing God’s people for 40 days. David saw his brothers were afraid – everyone was – even the soldiers!  Although he was only a young shepherd boy, David volunteered to help because he trusted God. He knew God was stronger than any giant.

Read 1 Samuel 17:45 aloud.

Ask: "Did he have heavy armor?" (No, he relied on God's power! He told the giant, "You come with a spear, but I come in the Name of the Lord Almighty!")

Explain: "Coming in God’s Name" means David knew God was right there with him, and God is all-powerful.

Ask: "Was it just David standing there alone?" (No! He stood in the power of God) .

Have kids act out the following scenes:

  • A giant named Goliath mocked God’s people for 40 days, challenging them to a fight. (Have the kids stomp and make a "grumble" sound like Goliath.)
  • David was a young shepherd delivering food, but when he saw the problem, he volunteered to help because he trusted God. (Have the kids raise their hands to ‘volunteer’.)
  • David didn't use a massive sword or heavy armor. He faced the giant with just a sling, 5 smooth stones, and the Name of the Lord Almighty. (Pretend to put on heavy, clunky armor and "fall over" because it's too big—just like David couldn't wear King Saul's armor! Pretend to swing a sling around.)

Discuss

  • How was 'little' David able to face a giant? (David didn't win because he was big or had a sword; he won because he came in the Name of the Lord. That means God’s power was with him! God is all-powerful and bigger than any "giant" problem or situation you will ever face. We trust in God because He is the One who gives us the strength to win.)
  • David didn't just wake up brave; he practiced trusting God every day as a shepherd. We can trust God with our daily problems right now.

Activity

Craft: "Name of the Lord" Badge

To see an example of this craft go to  Kids’ Corner Pinterest

Kids create badges that say: "I come in the NAME of the Lord Almighty".

  • They can decorate their badges with markers, crayons, or stickers.

Explain: David was a shepherd who knew God was his best friend. Just like David, you can wear this badge to remember that God is always with you—whether you’re feeling scared, sad, or just need a little help! / David shouted and ran towards the giant…

Game: Giant Drop!

When anything comes against us, we stand in His Name and the problems "tumble down".

Directions: Hang simple pictures on the wall of these examples of “giants”. Kids wear their new badges and throw soft balls at these "giants". Have the kids point to their badge and say: "God is bigger than this giant!"  Once they say it, take down the picture representing the problem to show that the Lord is more powerful than any struggle.

  • Hard schoolwork
  • Doing something new or difficult (learning to ride a bike)
  • Getting sick or getting a boo-boo
  • A broken toy
  • Sharing toys when you don't want to

Live

Say: “I will stand in the Name of the Lord Jesus!”

Prayer Focus: Thank God for His Son, Jesus Christ, and that He is the Name above every other name – He is the Lord Almighty. Tell Him that we will trust in His power to help us. Thank Him because He is the strongest and biggest!
