Title: Father’s Day: God Provides!

Verse: Matthew 6:26, “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?”

Objective: Kids will understand that God is the best Father. Because He provides for all of creation, we can trust Him with all of our needs.

Spark

“Birds Gotta Eat!”

Setup: Place "Food Stations" (bowls of beads/pom-poms) at one end of the room and "Nests" (chairs) at the other.
Directions: The teacher (or a couple of kid volunteers) acts as a "Storm," trying to gently tag the "birds" (kids) flying across the room.
Round 1: Kids must fly from their nest, grab two pieces of food, and return without being tagged.
Round 2: Remove half the food.
- Introduce the "Father Bird" rule: Select a student to be "Father Bird." They can shield other players from the storm, but if they get tagged, they are out.

Transition: It’s exhausting trying to secure everything you need on your own. On Father’s Day, we often thank our dads or male role models for how they protect and provide for us. But today, we’re looking at Matthew 6:26 to see how our Heavenly Father does this perfectly on a whole different level.

Scripture

Open your Bible to Matthew 6:26.

Read: “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?”

Discuss

Review the words sow, reap, and store. Explain that while humans work hard to "secure" their future, birds simply go out and find what the Lord has already provided.
Notice Jesus says "your heavenly Father feeds them," not "their creator". He is their Creator, but He is your Father. If God knows exactly what every little bird needs, He certainly knows what you need (food, shelter, warmth, help, school, friends, etc). God provides for His creation – He is our Father: we belong to Him, so we know that He will give us what we need.
Focus on the last sentence: "Are you not much more valuable than they?" Earthly performance (grades, sports, popularity) can make us feel like our value changes daily. But God the Father says your value is unchanging because you belong to Him. You are worth more to Him than all of the beautiful creation combined.

Ask: "If God puts that much detail into taking care of a sparrow, how much detail does He put into caring for your life?"

A good father doesn't just feed your stomach; He protects your heart.
- Ask: Does God provide for those “little” needs in our daily lives like: peace during tests, comfort when lonely, or wisdom for hard decisions, etc? (Yes, He does! God cares about the details.)
The teacher shares a quick story of how God provided for her/him. Then have the kids add things that they need and share how God is faithful to provide.
Trusting God isn't about doing things in our own strength and our own way; it's about realizing that He is the ultimate source of everything we have. Trusting is faith in action – it’s knowing that God’s Word is true and relying on Him. We keep our focus on Him, follow, and obey His directions.
Just like a father – God guides and teaches us. Whenever you feel worried about a need, you should look for a bird outside as a physical reminder that God is currently taking care of you. He knows exactly what you need, and He is faithful to provide.

Activity

Game: Bird Food

Setup: Give each child a cup and a "bird beak" (a spoon, clothespin, or tongs).

Directions: Each child must stand in their "nest" (stand on top of a piece of paper or hula hoop). Scatter pom-poms (food) on the floor or table.

Using only their "beaks" (no hands!) kids must pick up as much food as possible in 1 minute and put it into their cup. (Make it challenging by adding or taking away time, or having the kids only use one hand.)
Run several rounds so kids can try different types of beaks.

Say: “God is my perfect Father. He provides for me, He protects me, and I can trust Him with my life!”

Prayer Focus: Thank the Lord because He is our Father – He is the greatest. Thank Him for His faithful provision and how He cares for each one of us. Tell the Lord that you will trust in Him. Pray for our earthly fathers and father figures – asking God to give them strength, wisdom, and provision as they take of us.
