Title: Father’s Day: God Takes Care of Me!

Verse: Matthew 6:26, “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?”

Objective: Kids will understand that God is the best father – He knows all that we need and He provides for us. Everything we have has come from Him!

Spark

“Look at the Birds!”

Directions: Hold up a few pictures of birds – have some pictures that show a bird taking care of a baby bird in a nest; feeding it, etc. Ask questions such as: What are these? (birds). Where do they live? (Outside, in nature, etc). How do they get their food, shelter, etc.? Do they go to a bird food store? (No, they live from what they find outside – worms, bugs. They use sticks, and leaves to build nests, etc.) Ask: Who is taking care of the baby birds in these pictures? (parents, mom, dad)

Transition: Today is Father’s Day. On Father’s Day, we often thank our dads for how they take care of us. Today we will see how our Heavenly Father does this perfectly – He is the best father.

Scripture

Open Bible to Matthew 6:26

Read aloud: “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?”

Discussion:

Explain that birds don’t plant gardens or go to grocery stores; they simply fly out of their nests, and the Lord provides exactly what they need.
The Lord is the best Father – He knows each of us and takes care of us.
Ask the kids, "What do you need?" and write their answers on the board.
If God knows exactly what every little bird needs, He certainly knows what you need (food, shelter, warmth, help).
Share a quick story of how God provided for you, then ask if the kids have a story to share on how God provides for them.

God is the best Father for many reasons: He is the One who provides – He gives us everything that we need! We can thank Him for caring for us with everything - Big things (giving us shelter, food, help, etc…) or even small things (having a friend say a kind word to us if we’re feeling sad, or helping us find a toy that we lost, etc…).

Activity

Game: Bird Food

Setup: Give each child a cup and a "bird beak" (a plastic spoon, clothespin, or tongs).

Directions: Each child must stand in their "nest" (stand on top of a piece of paper or hula hoop). Scatter pom-poms (food) on the floor or table.

Using only their "beaks" (no hands!) kids must pick up as much food as possible in 2 minutes and put it into their cup.
Run several rounds so kids can try different types of “beaks”.

Say: “God is the best father! He takes care of me! He gives me everything I need!”

Prayer Focus: Praise Him for being the best Father! Thank the Lord for loving us, watching over us, and taking care of us. Praise Him for His goodness and love. He gives us everything we need!
