Title: Fix Your Eyes on Jesus
Verse: Hebrews 12:2 ,“Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith.” (NKJV)
Objective: Kids will understand that when we keep our eyes on Jesus, He gives us the faith and strength to get through any problem or scary situation.
Spark: Hit the Target
- Draw a big target on the whiteboard or tape a paper target to the wall.
- Divide the kids into two teams. Give them a ping-pong ball and have them take turns trying to throw it and hit the target.
- The Twist (Round 2): Now, have them try it again, but this time they have to turn around backwards and throw it without looking at the target.
Transition:
- Ask: "Which time was it way easier to hit the target? The first time or the second time?" (The first time!)
- Ask: "Why do you think it was so much easier when you were looking right at it?" (Because your eyes were on the target!)
- Say: "Exactly! To hit a target, you have to look right at it. Today, we are going to learn about a bible verse that tells us to do the exact same thing with Jesus! Let’s listen to Hebrews 12:2."
Scripture
Read: Hebrews 12:2, “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith.”
Explain: Have you ever heard someone tell you to 'keep your eyes on Jesus'? What does that actually mean? We can't see Him with our eyes right now, can we?
Think about playing games. If you are playing baseball, what does the coach tell you? 'Keep your eyes on the ball!' If you look away to wave at your friend in the stands, what happens? You miss the ball completely! If you are running a race, you have to look straight ahead at the finish line. If you look down at your shoes or turn around to see who is behind you, you might trip and fall.
It is the exact same way with Jesus. 'Fixing our eyes' on Jesus means we choose to think about Him, remember His words, and trust Him instead of focusing on our worries.
Do you remember the story of Peter walking on the water to get to Jesus?
- When Peter stepped out of the boat, he was looking right at Jesus. His faith was strong, and he actually walked on top of the water!
- But then, Peter looked away. He looked at the giant waves and listened to the loud, scary wind. He got terrified, took his eyes off Jesus, and what happened? He started to sink!
- As soon as Peter cried out, Jesus caught him. Jesus reminded him to have faith.
When we face 'waves' or problems in our lives—like being scared of the dark, feeling lonely at school, or having a hard day—Jesus is right there. When we look at Him, we remember that He is strong, He loves us, and He is completely in control. That gives us the courage to get through anything!
Questions
- What happens when we take our eyes off Jesus? (We can get distracted, scared, or overwhelmed by our problems.)
- How do we keep our eyes on Jesus if we can't see Him? (Obey His Words and do what He says, By reading our Bibles, praying, listening to His words, and remembering how good He is!)
Activity
Game 1: Keep Your Eyes on the Ball
Take three plastic cups and one ping-pong ball. Put the ball under one cup, and mix the cups around on the table. The kids have to "fix their eyes" on the correct cup to guess where the ball is. Give different children a turn to guess and even mix the cups.
Game 2: Stop and Drop!
The teacher holds up a handkerchief and calls out commands like "touch your toes!", "touch your nose!", or "hop on one foot!" The kids must follow the commands while keeping their eyes locked on the handkerchief. The second the teacher drops the handkerchief to the floor, everyone must immediately drop to the floor. If they aren't watching closely, they'll be too slow!
