David and Goliath I Come in the Name 3-6 Lesson
Children's Church Lessons
Kids' Corner 3-6 Grade Children's Church / Sunday School Lesson
Title: David and Goliath: I Come in the Name of the Lord Almighty!
Verse: 1 Samuel 17:45, David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.
Objective: Kids will learn that David did not fight Goliath alone; he stood in the power and name of the Lord Almighty. They will understand that they can stand on that same power to defeat any "giant" (problems) they face today.
Spark
"Whoa, That’s Big!"
- Setup: Use a measuring tape and a streamer on the wall to mark a height of 9–10 feet to represent Goliath.
- Have the kids stand against the wall to see how they measure up to a giant.
Transition: Ask the kids if they know who we are learning about today. Say: "You've heard this story, but today we’re going to look at the weapon David used to win."
Scripture
Open your Bible to 1 Samuel 17. Briefly summarize and have kids act out the following scenes:
- Goliath, a Philistine warrior giant (9-10 feet tall) mocks Israel for 40 days – challenging them to fight.
- David is sent by his father to deliver food to his brothers (who are soldiers) and sees/hears Goliath taunting the Israelites. He volunteers to fight trusting in His God.
- David refuses to wear King Saul’s armour. David faces Goliath with a sling and 5 smooth stones. David runs toward the giant and says…
Read: 1 Sam 17:45; David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.
Discussion:
- David ran towards the giant.
- Ask: "How was 'little' David able to face a giant? Did he have a massive sword or heavy armor?" (Have the kids look back at 1 Samuel 17:45 for the answer.)
- David didn't rely on physical weapons. He came against Goliath in the name of The Lord Almighty. This means God is all-powerful and bigger than any 'giant' problem or scary situation you will ever face!
Explain:
- David didn't just wake up brave. As a young shepherd, he practiced trusting God every day. Just as God rescued him from the jaws of the lion and the bear, David knew God would rescue him from the giant. Because of that trust, God was with him.
- Ask: Was it just David standing there alone? (No! He stood in the power of God. We don't have to be the strongest or the oldest to win; we just have to stand in the same Name of the Lord Almighty just as David did.)
- "If God is for us... no one can stand against us." We don’t need to wait until we are older or stronger to serve God; He is with you NOW.
Activity
Craft: "Name of the Lord Almighty" Badge
To see an example of this craft please go to Kids' Corner Pinterest
Kids create badges that say: "I come in the Name of the Lord Almighty." They will use cardboard and wrap with tin-foil to create a shield badge and write the verse with markers (Optional: Use yarn/string and tape the yarn to the back of the badge to be wearable. Decorate: add stickers).
Game: Giant Drop!
On a whiteboard, list common "giants" kids face (e.g., fear, sickness, difficult schoolwork, etc).
Kids wear their badges and throw soft balls at the "giants" on the board. Remind them that when anything comes against God’s people, we stand in His name, and the "giants" tumble down. The Lord is more powerful than any problem!
Live
Say: "I come in the NAME of the Lord Almighty."
Prayer Focus: Thank the Lord for being the Name above every other name. Tell Him that we trust in Him and ask Him for victory over the "giants" in our lives this week.
