Title: The Great Commission: Go Tell Others About Jesus
Verse: Matthew 28:19-20, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Objective: Kids will learn that disciples follow the Great Commission by telling others about Jesus—what He is like, what He did for us, and how He wants us to live!
Spark
Game: “The Mission: Go Tell"
- Setup: Draw simple outlines of people on a whiteboard to look like a crowd.
- How to Play: Pass or gently toss a soft ball around the room. Whoever catches the ball shares one thing they know about Jesus (e.g., "He loves everyone," "He is my friend").
- Every time a child shares, a teacher colors in one person on the board until the whole crowd is colored in.
- Challenge" Rounds: To keep the energy high, switch up the "sharing style" every few turns:
- See how fast we can color the whole board!
- Have them share their fact in a tiny mouse whisper or a "shout it from the rooftops" voice.
- Tell them, "The people on the board are super tall—stand on your tippy-toes to share your fact!" or "Share your fact while hopping on one foot!"
Transition: We completed the mission and shared the good news with the whole crowd! Now, this mission was just a fun game, but it reminds me exactly of the big mission God has for us in real life. Today we will learn about the most special, most important mission God has ever given to each one of us."
Scripture
Open your bible to Matthew 28:19-20 and read aloud.
Explain: After Jesus rose from the dead, He spent 40 days with His friends before going back to Heaven. But before He went up into Heaven, He gave His disciples a very important message about what they should do next. Guess what? This message is for us, too! It’s called the Great Commission. That's a big word, but it just means God’s special, super-important mission for us! Let's read what Jesus said:
First, Jesus tells us to GO! And do what? Make disciples.
- What is a disciple? (Disciples are followers of Jesus.)
- Can anyone name any of Jesus’ disciples from the Bible? (Peter, John, Matthew, etc.)
- Who else are disciples? (We are!)
Second, we need to go and make disciples...
- How do we do that? (We do it by telling others about Jesus and showing them how to obey God! We tell them what He is like, what He has done for us, and what He wants us to do.)
- Can we only do this mission when we are inside the church building? (NO WAY! We also share Jesus by telling others and showing what He is like everywhere we go! When we are kind, helpful, and loving, we are showing people exactly what Jesus is like.)
Let's play a quick game. I'm going to call out a place, and I want you to raise your hand and tell me: How can we make disciples and show Jesus' love there?
- Location 1: The Grocery Store
- How can we be on God's mission while we are walking down the aisles or waiting in line? (being patient in line, speaking politely, being kind and greeting the cashier, etc.)
- Location 2: The Playground or a Sports Game
- How can we show Jesus' love when we are playing with other kids? (being kind, sharing, being patient, putting others first, etc.)
- Location 3: Walking around your neighborhood
- What can you do right outside your front door to show people what Jesus is like? (waving to neighbors, picking up trash, etc.)
Say: See? You can be on God's mission everywhere you go! The absolute best news we can share with our words and our actions is that Jesus died for our sins and came back alive again! When we choose to trust in Him, we get to live in God's family forever and ever. That is too good to keep to ourselves!"
